Red Quaker Sampler in Cross Stitch

Red Quaker Cross Stitch Sampler

Stitch this classic two-tone sampler cross stitch and back stitch, exclusive to NeedleKnowledge®. The pattern uses just two colors of floss, so it can be easily adapted to your favorite color palette.  The finished size of the sampler is 12×16″ when worked on 14-count Aida, or 11×14″ when worked on 16-count Aida.

The individual elements of the design can also be used for other projects. Use the borders on a towel or bookmark, use the alphabet to personalize an item, or use on the single, square elements to make a pin cushion or biscornu. This free cross stitch pattern offers so many possibilities!

Additional freebies are available on the patterns & projects page, or visit the blog and sign up for the newsletter. That way you’ll never miss a free pattern!

Materials Needed:
  • 2 skeins each of floss in a light and dark tone
  • Aida cloth 22×26″ in 14-count or 20×22″ in 16-count
  • tapestry needle
Directions:

Download the Red Quaker Sampler Pattern – the pattern is provided as a 6-page pdf.

Overcast the edges of the Aida fabric to prevent raveling. Work the design in cross stitch following the charted pattern. The pattern is given in quadrants due to its size, and it’s best to start at the center of the design and stitch outwards.

Use two strands of floss in your needle for all cross stitch and a single strand for all back stitch. Refer to the cross stitch page for directions on working the stitches.

This is gorgeous. It’ll take me a while to stitch, but it like long projects. And it’s free – wowzer!

Do you know which reds (brand and #) were used in the sampler in the photo?

Reds are tough! Finding two in the same line that coordinate perfectly is a challenge indeed. I would use Gloriana 12-strand silk in colors 012 Rosewood and 162 Schoolhouse Red or Rainbow Gallery Elegance Silk Pearl #8 in colors E821 and E826. While the silk pearl isn’t officially “divisible”, you can separate plies for the back stitched areas if needed.

Sara, I have this project as an ebook version and the brands/colours used by the designer are DMC Cotton Embroidery Floss 815 and 3705 for the red version. Alternatively, it can be stitched in blue using 823 and 322 for a blue version.

      Hope this helps.

I bought the book for this sampler as an ebook for my Kindle a couple of years ago and felt frustrated that I could see the pattern on the Kindle (or PC) but was unable to print it. So I felt rather pleased to find it on-line.
